Lightning and thunder

The risk of being struck by lightning is small, but a direct lightning strike can cause severe injury or be fatal.

Things to keep in mind during a thunderstorm

• Stay indoors.
• Avoid being out in open fields.
• Unplug cables from wall power outlets.
• Do not stand under trees or other tall objects.
• Avoid being in or on the water.
• It is generally safer to be inside buildings during a thunderstorm.
• Avoid touching or standing near lights or other electrical appliances, water systems (taps and showers) or fireplaces.
• Avoid going out onto balconies or verandas, for example.
• Staying in tents, open boats and sailing boats (unless they are properly sheltered) or on bicycles and motorbikes can also be dangerous.
• An umbrella, a golf club, a fishing rod or a kite on a string can act as a lightning conductor and should be avoided during a thunderstorm.
