Make a plan before your journey

• Plan your journey and set off in good time.
• Make sure you are well-rested.
• Equip your car for the season with, for example, a snow brush and an ice scraper, a snow shovel, jumper leads, a tow rope, an extra warning triangle, a high-visibility vest, a torch, a fully charged mobile phone, warm clothes, a blanket, water and something to eat.
• In winter: check your car’s winter equipment, inspect your winter tyres and prepare for what to do if you get stranded by the roadside.
• Check for traffic disruptions on your route on the Swedish Transport Administration’s website or via Sveriges Radio's traffic news service. 

During your journey

• Adjust your speed to suit the road conditions and never drive faster than the applicable speed limit.
• Keep a safe distance.
• Take regular breaks.
• If your car breaks down: switch on your hazard warning lights, set up a warning triangle, move away from the road, call for help.
• Keep up to date with the local weather along your route. There are significant local variations.
• Tune in to Swedish Radio’s P4 channels – there you will get up-to-date information on the traffic situation.
• Choose roads with central barriers or traffic safety cameras where it is possible.
• Always follow the authorities’ recommendations in the event of weather warnings.

How you can help at the scene of a road accident

• Only stop if you think you can be of assistance. If there are already people at the scene, you can drive on – unless you have medical or first-aid training.
• Park your own car as safely as possible. Make sure you do not risk being hit yourself or blocking the traffic.
• Call 112.
• Warn others by using your hazard warning lights or similar, so that they do not drive into the accident.
• Find out how you can help. Are there any injured people? People in shock tend to wander off into the woods or out onto the road. Try to help them.
• Try to get a clear overview of the situation. What has happened? Where has this happened? How many cars are involved? How many people are injured? Report this to the emergency services when you have the chance.
• Listen to what the emergency services say and keep out of the way if necessary.
