Evacuation
An evacuation means that people are moved away from an area if there is a risk to their lives and health. An evacuation may need to take place quickly, so it is a good idea to have thought in advance about what you would need to take with you.
In Sweden, we have not yet had to evacuate large residential areas. However, climate change and an unstable world mean that we need to be prepared for this. Events that could lead to an evacuation include, for example, floods, fires, nuclear accidents or war.
How will I know if I need to evacuate?
If an area needs to be evacuated, the authorities will issue an Important Public Announcement (VMA). Follow the authorities’ instructions and listen to Sveriges Radio P4 for further information. If the internet is working, you can also look for information on your local council’s website or here on Krisinformation.se.
Who decides on an evacuation?
In the event of accidents and fires, it is usually the emergency services who decide on an evacuation. The police may also decide on an evacuation if, for example, there are public order disturbances or security concerns. What do I need to take with me if I have to evacuate?
You need to take the essentials with you so that you can be away for an extended period. Think this through in advance and keep important items and documents in a place where you can find them quickly.

- something to eat and drink
- warm clothes

- EU Health Insurance Card

- computer + power adaptor
- prescriptions for medicines
- a phone charger for use in the car
- a list (on paper) of important telephone numbers
- a battery-powered or hand-crank radio + spare batteries
- registration documents for all vehicles, title deeds, marriage certificate, list of bank accounts, etc.
- insurance documents for your home, personal insurance, other assets, vehicles and pets
