Yesterday’s incident, in which the temperature was raised in a number of freezers and refrigerators, highlights how important it is to protect the technology that controls them, according to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Systems for controlling and monitoring critical functions in industry are vulnerable if they use older technology and are connected to the internet. This is because it can be more difficult to apply security updates, which increases the chances of attackers gaining access to the system.

The NCSC urges organisations to review the security of their operational technology environments and to follow the recommendations available to mitigate the risks.

There are no specific recommendations for members of the public.
