This is how Sweden’s total defence is organised

Military defence

Military defence comprises the Swedish Armed Forces, the Home Guard and a number of other authorities whose main task is to support military defence. The Swedish Armed Forces defend Sweden’s territory and borders.

Civil defence

Society as a whole and all the functions that must continue to operate even during wartime. This includes government agencies, local authorities and regions, the business sector, voluntary organisations, religious communities, private individuals, and community and cultural life. The aim is to protect the civilian population and to ensure, for example, that healthcare and transport continue to function in the event of a threat of war or during wartime. 

The NATO defence alliance

The very foundation of Sweden’s total defence is not affected by membership of NATO. However, NATO does set requirements regarding what Sweden’s military and civil defence must be capable of. The purpose of the defence alliance is for all member states, acting together, to be strong enough to deter other countries outside the alliance from attacking us.
