Orange warning regarding wind and snow in the mountain range

On Thursday 1 February, snow and very strong winds, up to local gales, are expected in the mountain range from Jämtland County and northwards. SMHI has therefore issued orange warnings for wind. No hiking is recommended in mountainous areas.

These warnings are valid from February 1th:

  • Mountain areas in northern Dalarna and Jämtland County - Orange warning for wind and snow.
  • Mountain areas in northern Jämtland and Lapland - Orange warning for wind and snow.
  • Västerbotten County and northernmost Jämtland County - Orange warning for wind.
  • Northeastern Norrbotten County - Orange warning for wind.

How an orange warning for wind and snow affect me?

  • No hiking is recommended in mountainous areas.
  • Rescue efforts in mountain environment can be risky and may take a long time.
  • Very difficult to move and set up or anchor tents.
  • Very difficult to orientate due to severely reduced visibility.
  • High risk of frostbite.

How might an orange warning for wind affect me?

  • Very limited road access due to fallen trees.
  • Bus, train, air and ferry delays and cancellations.
  • Likely power outages in areas with overhead power lines, also affecting mobile telecommunications networks.
  • Damage to buildings and risk of flying objects.
  • Extensive forest damage.
