2G and 3G networks are being shut down – some mobile phones may not be able to call 112

Starting in December, 2G and 3G networks in Sweden will begin to be shut down. Some mobile phones will not be able to reach the emergency number 112, even though they use the 4G network. If you have one of these phones, your operator will contact you, according to the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).

The issue currently affects customers of Telenor, Tele2, and 3 (Tre), since Telia will keep its 2G network in place until 2027. PTS has required operators to immediately contact affected customers.

If your phone is one of those that cannot reach 112:

  • Your operator will contact you shortly.
  • Your phone will be blocked sometime between December 1 and February 2.
  • You need to replace your phone or switch to Telia.

About calling 112 after the shutdown

  • You must have a mobile phone that supports 4G and 5G networks and voice calls over 4G in order to call 112 when the 2G and 3G networks are shut down.
  • PTS has decided that the operators 3 (Tre), Telenor, and Tele2 must block phones that cannot call 112 through their own networks as of February 2, 2026.
  • For phones requiring a specific action — for example removing the SIM card — in order to connect to Telia’s network, this requirement applies starting December 1, 2025. This is to prevent people from keeping phones that cannot be used to contact 112.
  • The blocked phones will not be able to use any voice services via the mobile network. The PTS decision does not apply to Telia’s customers because their 2G network will remain until 2027, meaning 112 will function as before until then.

Check whether your phone is affected

Operators must inform customers who are affected. If you still want to check your phone, you can follow the instructions from your operator. The information is available only in Swedish. Contact your operator if you need help.

Only call 112 in emergencies

It is important not to call 112 just to test your phone. If you are affected by the issue, you will be contacted by your operator.
