Traffic in winter conditions
Driving in winter conditions:
-
-Plan your journey and start on time.
-
Listen to weather and traffic reports on the radio.
-
Weather conditions often vary locally and large amounts of snow or ice can develop quickly. Road conditions can vary according to geography. Choose roads with central barriers or speed cameras.
-
Check your car's winter equipment, winter tyres and prepare what to do if you get stuck on the road.
-
Your driving behaviour has a big impact on safety. Keep your distance from the vehicle in front and adapt your speed to road conditions and visibility.
-
Avoid overtaking ploughs, such as tandem ploughs, and always follow weather warnings.
- If the weather looks very bad, consider using another mode of transportation.
- Always follow authorities' or the police’s advice to avoid driving.
How to help in a traffic accident
- Move on if people are already at the scene - unless you have specialist medical knowledge. If you have to stop, park your car as safely as possible.
- Call 112.
- Use your hazard lights to warn others so they don't drive into the accident.
- Find out if there are casualties at the scene. Shocked people may run into the woods or onto the road. Try to help them.
- Try to get an idea of what has happened. How many cars are involved? How many people are injured? Tell the rescuers as soon as possible.
- Listen to the rescuers and stay back if they ask you to.
