Red warning for snow and wind

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a red warning for snowfall and wind in parts of Gävleborg County from Thursday afternoon. The Swedish Transport Administration urges the public in that area not to travel on the roads at all. There are also orange and yellow weather warnings issued in large parts of the country. The first warning will take effect at 2:00 a.m. on 1 January.

Red alert for snow and wind in parts of Gävleborg County

Extremely heavy snowfall is expected as storm Anna moves in on Thursday. It will also be windy, with a risk of severe drifting. This could make the roads completely impassable.

  • The Swedish Transport Administration and SMHI urge the public not to travel on the roads at all. Follow local weather forecasts and current traffic information.
  • Rescue operations may take a long time.
  • Cancelled departures and severe delays in public transport are likely.
  • Be prepared for prolonged power outages if you live in an area with overhead power lines. Do not go near fallen power lines.


The warning is in effect from 3 p.m. on 1 January to 7 a.m. on 2 January. The warning concerns parts of Gävleborg County, just inland from the coast.

Orange warning for snow and wind in southern Norrland's coastal region

Heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to cause traffic problems.

  • The Swedish Transport Administration and SMHI advise: do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • Follow local weather forecasts and current traffic information.
  • It may be very difficult to get around in traffic. Even emergency services and snow clearance may have difficulty getting through.
  • Delays or cancellations in public transport are likely.
  • Power cuts and disruptions to the telephone network are likely in areas with overhead cables. Do not go near fallen power lines.

The warning is in effect from 11:00 on 1 January to 09:00 on 2 January.

Yellow warnings for snow and wind

Large parts of Svealand and southern Norrland have yellow warnings for snowfall. In parts of the area, this is also combined with wind. The weather may cause traffic problems, power outages and telecommunications disruptions.

  • The Swedish Transport Administration advises: do not travel unless absolutely necessary. Follow local weather forecasts and current traffic information.

Yellow warnings for black ice

Yellow warnings for black ice have been issued for large parts of Götaland, south-western Svealand and Gotland. Rain is expected on cold roads on Thursday, resulting in black ice.

  • The Swedish Transport Administration urges: do not venture out into traffic unless absolutely necessary. Follow local weather forecasts and current traffic information.
  • There is a risk of delays or cancellations in public transport.

The warnings will take effect from 2 a.m. on 1 January.
