Warning of GPS interference in the Baltic Sea

During the spring, the Swedish Maritime Administration has received several reports of GPS interference in the Baltic Sea. The interference has intensified recently. The authorities are now urging recreational boat owners and others who will be navigating at sea to be extra vigilant.

Interference affects digital nautical charts

On its website, the Swedish Maritime Administration writes that many recreational boat owners today navigate using digital nautical chart systems. For these digital aids to work, an exact position must be determined using satellites. For some time now, the signals have been affected by interference, which means that the system's position cannot be trusted. Since May, the Maritime Administration has therefore been warning of GPS interference, which now affects most of the Baltic Sea.

The Swedish Maritime Administration's tips for safe navigation:

- Always have alternative methods of determining your position; do not rely solely on the position shown on your electronic nautical chart.
- Make sure you have an up-to-date paper nautical chart on board.
- Follow current navigation warnings via VHF radio and the Swedish Maritime Administration's website.
