Astra Zeneca vaccine should not be given to the elderly

The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends that the Astra Zeneca vaccine be given primarily to people between the ages of 18 and 64. Instead, people over age 64 should receive one of the previously approved vaccines from Pfizer or Moderna.

The Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine was approved last Friday. The vaccine does not require the same careful handling as the previously approved vaccines from Pfizer/BionTech and Moderna.

However, there is still a lack of data on how effectively the Astra Zeneca vaccine protects against covid-19 in the elder age groups. Such data is expected in the spring. While awaiting this, the Public Health Agency recommends that the Astra Zeneca vaccine be given primarily to people under the age of 65.
