Pfizer/Biontech vaccine recommended for children

The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends that children aged 12-15 who are to be vaccinated against Covid-19 should only receive Pfizer/Biontech’s Comirnaty vaccine. The reason is that there is the most knowledge about this vaccine

At present, two vaccines are being used in the Covid-19 vaccination programme in Sweden: Pfizer/Biontech (Comirnaty) and Moderna (Spikevax), both so-called mRNA vaccines.

As Comirnaty has been used more for children around the world, there is also more safety data about that vaccine than there is for Spikevax. The Public Health Agency of Sweden has therefore decided to recommend this vaccine for the youngest age groups.

“All in all, we see reasons to choose the vaccine that we know most about and that is the most tried and tested when it comes to vaccinating children between the ages of 12 and 15,” says Anders Tegnell, Head of Department and State Epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

In September, the Public Health Agency of Sweden decided to recommend Covid-19 vaccination for those aged 12 and over.
