Second booster recommended for people most at risk of serious illness

The Public Health Agency of Sweden is recommending a second booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for people who live in special housing for the elderly, receive home care or home nursing, and for everyone aged 80 or over. The second booster dose should be administered no earlier than four months after the first one.

In recent weeks, the spread of Covid-19 has also increased among people who are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill. For example, residents in special housing for the elderly.

The risk of serious illness increases with age. Vaccines protect against illness, serious illness and death from Covid-19, and the Public Health Agency of Sweden is therefore recommending that those who are at the greatest risk of serious illness should be offered a second booster dose. This means a fourth dose of the vaccine in total for this group.
This recommendation applies to:
• People living in special housing for the elderly
• People receiving home care or home nursing
• People aged 80 years or over
The regions can start offering the second booster dose no earlier than four months after the previous booster dose. Vaccination work will start from calendar week 8 in the regions.
The booster dose currently recommended is a full dose of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine or half of the Moderna vaccine Spikevax.
