Orange wind and snow warning for the Lapland mountains

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI, has issued an orange warning for wind and snow on the bare mountains of the Northern parts of the Lappland Mountains. SMHI strongly advises against going out on the mountains this weekend.

On Saturday evening and on Sunday, a deep low pressure will move up over the Arctic Ocean resulting in snowfall and wind in the alpine regions of the northern Lapland Mountains, writes SMHI. The snowfall can be heavy, about 10-20 cm and locally more. On the mountains, a southwesterly wind 17-22 metres per second.

Rescue efforts in mountain environments will be more difficult. It can be very difficult to move about and anchor tents. It can also be very difficult to orientate oneself due to severely reduced visibility.

An orange warning is the second highest level in the weather warning system.
