Information about fire at nuclear power plant in Ukraine

During the night, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that a fire had broken out in connection with shelling at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in south-east Ukraine. The fire has now been extinguished. It is believed that no elevated radiation levels have been measured. But even if a serious accident were to occur at the nuclear power plant, the consequences in Sweden are limited by the large distance, writes the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.

Update 07:30

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) states that the fire that occurred in a building in the vicinity of the reactors has now been extinguished. The safety systems are in operation at the nuclear power plant and no elevated radiation levels have been measured.

In a press release, the IAEA writes that they are monitoring the situation closely. No change in radiation levels has been measured, states the IAEA.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) states on its website that no elevated radiation levels have been measured in Sweden. The SSM also writes that there would have to be a major emission from the nuclear power plant for Sweden to be affected, since an emission of radioactive substances is diluted in the atmosphere.

If a serious accident were to occur at the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, the consequences in Sweden are limited by the large distance, writes the SSM.

The SSM also writes that if such an event were to occur and the winds carry the emission towards Sweden, iodine tablets, staying indoors or evacuation would not be necessary. The impact that may possibly occur in Sweden is primarily on food production.
